Lakota Thiyuha

Thiyuha: To have a house(hold) to settle down and have a home

Pine Ridge Reservation, located in South Dakota, has been facing a severe housing crisis for many years. The reservation is home to the Oglala Lakota Nation, and the lack of adequate housing has been a major issue for the tribe. The current situation is dire, with overcrowding and substandard living conditions being the norm.

At Red Cloud Renewable, we want to change that…

created a “Dome House” concept that is not only sustainable, but affordable for the people in need on Pine Ridge Reservation.

The Lakota Thiyuha Project offers innovative housing that is affordable, sustainable (cellular concrete), and easy to heat; increasing workforce development as we hire only Natives.

CELLULAR CONCRETE

CELLULAR CONCRETE

South Dakota winters can be harsh, with below freezing temperatures, many people struggle to heat their homes.

The Lakota Thiyuha Dome Houses are made with cellular concrete. Cellular concrete, also known as “foam-crete” is not only fire resistant but has extremely insulative qualities.

The thermal conductivity of cellular concrete is proportional to density - the lighter, the better insulation. This means that a 10 inch wall of 40 pounds of concrete will have the same insulating value as a brick wall three times as thick.
